Bio

Dr. Ali A. Butt is a Project Scientist and Project Manager at the University of California Pavement Research Center, a joint program between the Davis and Berkeley campuses. With over a decade of combined industry and academic expertise in pavement engineering, he has established himself as a leading researcher in sustainable transportation infrastructure. Dr. Butt's research is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on the intersection of infrastructure, environment, and policy. His core areas of expertise include environmental and social life cycle assessment for sustainable infrastructure decision-making, life cycle cost analysis and construction work zones, advanced research into asphalt and concrete construction materials and long-life pavement design, investigating the relationship between pavement condition and vehicle fuel efficiency, and development of construction materials product category rules and environmental product declarations. Dr. Butt has authored a number of journal manuscripts, presented at several conferences, and developed state and federally funded technical reports, in addition to numerous policy briefs and white papers. His leadership extends beyond publication. Dr. Butt actively shapes the future of transportation research and policy through his advisory roles with the Federal Highway Administration’s Community of Knowledge and the Conference of European Road Directors. Dr. Butt effectively manages complex state and federal research projects, bridging the gap between advanced academic research and practical, implementable solutions for transportation agencies. Pavement life cycle assessment, life cycle cost analysis, construction material testing, urban metabolism, pavement-vehicle interaction, sustainable transportation, construction work zones, multicriteria decision methods
